The researchers studied 760 songs from 1985 through 2013 to come up with their data, which is “about 83% accurate.”

Another article I’ve read on this subject, analyzing the current  Bruno Mars hit song “Uptown Funk,” suggests that the number of background singers and instruments involved in your song may well be what will push them to the top of the charts:
