I’m going to be the proud new owner of a Civil War-style spy instrument: an invisible ink pen!

I won it yesterday in a contest run by Karen Abbott, author of American Rose about Gypsy Rose Lee, whose new book, Liar Temptress Soldier Spy: Four Women Undercover in the Civil War, will soon be available in bookstores.

The Civil War era is one that I have never really investigated as much as I should, simply because the whole barbarous idea of slavery has always given me a ferocious case of the creeps.  Kidnapping people, selling people, enslaving people – that’s all beyond horrible.

I was therefore very proud to learn that one of my forebears was a Major-General in the Union Army and on the side of the angels.  I’m thrilled to be descended from a man who fought to free them.  I hope he kicked plenty of Confederates’ butts on the battlefield, too.

So I’m looking forward to reading Liar Temptress Soldier Spy and finding out more additional info about four ladies who contributed to the cause – by spying!  One even infiltrated the Confederate White House.  Brava!  Already I want to hear more.

Meanwhile, all those of you who know me personally can already figure out that even though the Civil War is long over, I’ve got plans for my invisible ink pen.  My closest friend in the world and I have already discussed all of the mischief we might just make with it.
